Problem Acer Aspire 5000

I am working on an Acer Aspire 5000 laptop which just shows the screen saver in normal Windows mode, if it has not been used for a time, and if you press a key it does not allow you to get to the desktop. The OS is Windows XP Home and the laptop is about 2 years old. I have run some diagnostics on the hardware and all looks ok.

I suspected a possible OS corruption, so I reinstalled the OS using the recovery disks, after having backed up all the essential data.

Having performed the reinstall of the OS the laptop is still the same. If I take the battery out and power up the laptop is fine. Could this be an ACPI problem?

Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so did they find a solution?
