Ben is choosing a type of network cable that will be effective in a work environment that includes numerous electric motors and generators. This type of cable must be flexible, carry standard Ethernet traffic, use RJ-45 connectors and be resistant to the level of electrical interference put out by the motors. Of the choices below, which type of cabling best suits Ben’s needs? Choose only one answer.

    A. Coaxial cable
    B. Fiber Optic cable
    C. Shielded-twisted pair cable (STP)
    D. Unshielded-twisted pair cable (UTP)

    Answer later.

Ill say C, but depending on HOW flexible, fibre optic would surely be ideal!? i mean, i havent really got to that bit in the book yet, but surely the EM interference wouldnt affect the light signals and so it would be utterly immune to the effects, actually, as i recall, fibre optics these days are incredibly resilient to flexing.....

ok, im just gonna go against the grain here and say B: fibre optic.

um Fergal, one of the requirements is that the cable use RJ45 connectors.

Honestly Fergal did u read the question!?!?!? anyway how r u doing with the book? I am now onto the software side of the book...I thought I would take the Hardware exam first but have decided to finish the whole baby then take them both but not quite at the same time..probably within 2-3 months of each other...

oops! well i obviously meant that relatively new and obscure new tech thats coming out with RJ45 compliant fibre optics! obviously!
    .................................
No? oh well! in light of my error, ill go C!

Correct answer is C. Fiber optic would work but they take a special connector type. RJ-45 isn't allowed. Shielded Twisted Pair cabling will do everything that UTP will do but it carries every "shielding" (hence the name) that will resist electrical interference. Used a lot in manufacturing venues.

Good bunch of responses, gang. More tomorrow.
