...or in plainer terms - "Check what's in the box before you recycle it"

That joyous time of year when what was the empty space under the workbench is now so full of old crap that you can't fit anymore in and a large trip to the recycle drop off point is in order. It fell to me to strip out any old drives etc and get the stuff outa the way.

I spotted three seperate physically identical systems that had been pulled from a single client before I started here (ie more than 8 months ago) and a quick query to the other techs scratched up the knowledge that one had a failed m/board, the other had a failed "mrmm rmmmr hrmm, now what was it?" and the last had a failed "er PSU I think".

Well, an hour or two put in afterwork stripping usable bits n bobs out ended up with a pile of hopefuls and after binning the failures I ended up with a Q6600 2.4Ghz quad core, 4Gb of DDR2, a 450W functioning PSU, 250Gb sata drive that passed a long DST and a motherboard that, well, needs treating like a lady, turn the power on and if you aren't quick enough it fizzles out. (bonus, eSata on the board)

But, apart from the tempermental PSU the thing is now booting and happily running Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and the ISO's are copying over, time to setup that virtual test/training environment I've been meaning to.

Oh, and in the spirit of the failing motherboard and in honour of Blizzard/WoW's GM's, she's called WAIH-01, or "WorkingAsIntendedHost-01"
