As anyone seen 300 yet? I saw it today and thought it was a awesome movie. I love greek mythology and the story of the 300 spartans.

Pure BS from holywood in collaboration with depraved neo fascists designed to demonise anything that is not western and specifically in the current political climate to demonise an ancient race that brought the first charter of human rights that has a copy installed in the UN building, is recorded in the Bible, was a 'must' reading for US politicians (before the Nazis took power in the US), enriched the human race and was a model of tolerance and prosperity until it was destroyed by a homosexual who was in envy of something that he never was and could never be.

You want true history? Here is 300 the movie and here is the documentary about that great ancient civilisation.

Problem with neo fascists and their historically illiterate pawns is that when an acncient civilisation that had gone to sleep decides to wake up, the incestuous blood thirsty filth will do everything it can to prevent it.

Those filthy scums installed and imposed a dictatorial and blood thirsty regime in that ancient country because it suited their depraved purpose to create a monster that could be used to frighten their own sheepish population and this movie is another attempt to belittle an ancient race, a race that no filthy neocon can ever come remotely close to.

I just call it the "hollywood effect", why let the truth get in the way of a good movie, or in many cases a mediocre movie :D

I saw it & thought it was excellent, will definitely be buying the DVD when it comes out.

It's actually based on Frank Miller's retelling of the story so I'm pretty sure it's not entirely historically accurate! From some of the scenes in the film you can tell this is much more historical fantasy than documetary.

Yes the Persians brought much to the world but you're talking about a different leader and you can't debate that building an empire mainly through military expansion was a pretty big characteristic of the race.

I'm not sure that this will influence people's perceptions of Iranians or other peoples from the middle east; certainly for me the fantastical depiction of one king 2,500 years ago does not hold any weight over my opinion!
(Although Xerxes did have an amazing simularity to a Goa'uld, maybe they weren't all Egyptian gods!)

I think the depiction of the Persians is mainly to emphasise the good/evil sides, and that this is more down to Frank Miller than Hollywood.
(Admittedly I say that not having read Frank Miller's book).

Anyway you seem very happy to dismiss Alexander, and why do you feel it necessary to mention that he was homosexual? What relevance does that have?

After reading all these rave reviews, I'm definitely going to have to go and watch the film.

I remember reading a book about it a few years back. Can't remember who wrote it, but apparently the battle is an actual historical fact. According to what I read, the defending force was a coalition of several Greek armies to begin with. But shortly into the battle the other Greek armies withdrew, leaving the 300 Spartans to fight the Persians on their own. The Spartans were eventually slaughtered to man, but not without exacting a huge toll on the invaders. And it seems that their sacrifice bought the other Greek tribes enough time to to raise reinforcements to counter the Persian offensive.

I don't know how far the hollywood version strays from the true historical account. But it would be fun to find out.

It's a superb film and the battle scene's are some of the best I have ever seen. I can understand where oggler is coming from as there are some clear parallels with modern society's and the differences between them. It's not meant to be a historical account of what happened, but there are bound to be some who think it will be. From reading some of the background to this battle and some of the accounts of what happened, it's clear that there isn't a definitive version of events that all historians can actually agree on.

At the end of the day, it was fantasic entertainment and if they had been selling plastic swords and shields on the way out, I would have had a fight with Wagnerk Classic Star Trek stylee (like Spok vs Kirk). Alas they weren't on sale. :)

who the hell are you calling a nazi and a sheep?:x Just because you don't like a movie is no reason to get bent out of shape and insult my whole country or its people. If you feel that strongly about it start a dam blog! It just a movie dude. For ENTERTAINMENT not to be used as a training tool for our wee ones in school or to brainwash the adults. Just take 2 of wizards pills and you feel better in the morning.

Unfortunately, there are people the world over who do actually get their only history from films, and are liable to take things as gospel. But hey, should that stop people making entertaining films?? I for one would be mightily disappointed if they did.

I've seen the trailers and it looks phenomenal.
