Ok. I can receive emails but not send...bounces when I try to send to my yahoo account. Go figure.

Gotta go to work now, so I can't work on it again until this evening.

Not sure I have yet. I have to try it out to make sure. I've been able to hit my website and mail server all day from the office and am regularly receiving mail...just can't send any from that account yet.

No, that didn't do it. I've forwarded ports 25. 80, and 143 on my DSL modem and while I can get to my web and mail server from a remote location and receive mail, I can't send mail. Of course, this nastygram I found at Yahoo mail might be the answer:
EDIT: This wasn't happening before I switched ISPs, so I'm wondering if there still isn't something I'm missing.

Well James for outbound emails to work, it's usually pretty straight forward.. you need to use whatever recommended settings your ISP suggests as some do not allow relaying. also some SMTP servers require authentication, not many that i encounter these days though.

So, you will either need your SMTP server for outgoing emails to be set to your ISP's mail server ie mail.myisp.com (or whatever the name of their SMTP mail server is) *or* your email hosting domain, mail.wiredwriter.net but i am not sure whether you are running your own mail server or using a hosting company's.

The web and mail servers are sitting on my desk. The mail server is (as you might imagine) http://mail.wiredwriter.net. I don't get why I can't send. As you said Pete, sending an email is pretty straightforward. Of course, everything goes through the provider's DSL modem, but I can't see any settings on the modem that would block sending mail. Here's a copy of the "nastygram". Perhaps it contains a clue that I can't unscramble:

Looks to me like you need to put your ISP,s SMTP mail server details into the qmail-send program.
