I was asking in another post about the ethical hacker as something to do for fun but I noticed I cant take the exam for it.

So I was wondering what Security certs you guys have done that you'd recommend for something new to study ?

    cheers Richie

CompTIA Security+ is a really interesting introduction to Security. For something a bit more hardcore, although admittedly out of date, look into the CPTS cert I passed last year.

Security+ is a good start as it doesn't require any prerequisites.

MCSA/MCSE: Security is another one which doesn't necessary require experience in the security industry, but then again you gotta do a considerable number of exams to actually get it.

After that the CEH and CISSP's of this world require 2-5 years of experience backed by employer related proof and in some instances you need to be referred by someone who already has the cert.

I agree, do the Security+ cert and maybe a MS security exam.

Saying that, I'm waiting to hear back the result of the SSCP exam I took last week. It's higher than the Security+, but lower than the CISSP.

This may be something that may interest you after the Comptia & MS exam(s). To gain the full SSCP credential you have to pass the exam, as well as having at least 1 year of IT Security experience and a reference (as well as agreeing to the ISC2 Code of Conduct, etc). However if you don't have that (and you pass the exam) you gain the Associate of SSCP credential.

You can read about my experience of the exam (as I haven't completed the full process yet) here.

The best security courses are, unfortunately, the vendor-specific ones. Qualys do really good training - but it's pretty much useless outside of Qualys products. Sourcefire also do excellent training but, again, it's useless if you aren't using Snort & their 3G system.

Most security is learnt hands-on anyway (I got a lot of my (ahem) 'training' from newsgroups, IRC and other online sources) and by trying to break things. I think the best route into security would probably be to grab a hold of three or four different vendors' firewalls and learn them, then knock up a snort box and play around with some rules (you can run it on Windoze if you're not Linuxified). Then take the Security+ and start pimping yourself out via your CV. Of course, you're highly unlikely to get a job without experience - I guess the best advice I could give was that I found my way into security after a few years doing loads of other things in IT. Eventually I just ended up being 'the firewall bloke' and it went from there.

I'm really not sure why there aren't that many decent security courses. Probably because most employers are nervous about hiring people who they think are going to be able to rinse their systems dry whenever they feel like it!

I doubt I'm in your league but from what I've learned so far I completely agree with what you wrote. Try to build up a wide range of experience and when you come across anything security related, get as involved as you can.

I think there probably aren't many decent security courses about because its such a fast paced industry. As soon as you write a good course its probably already out of date. For that reason I do recommend people study for courses like Security+, CPTS and CEH simply because although limited, there's nothing else out there and it at least shows you know about tools, exploits, threats etc that are available, even if they aren't cutting edge.

Do hardcore security people respect certs? I don't think so....... but if you have experience and choose to get them, good for you.

I believe the Security+ is a good one to start off with as it covers alot of the basics (when it comes to that subject).

I agree. Anyone thinking of any security career would do well to do Sec+ when they start out as I did (I now work in Security)

I sat the 2008 version and found it to be quite up to date although as you've probably seen us write on here, IT Security moves along very quickly. I don't think there are any plans to update it for a while yet
