    Hi guys,

I'm looking at wanting to learn about SQL Server, how it works, how to administer it and so on. I'm an IT Systems Engineer at the moment with nearly 7 years hands on experience working in IT if that is relevant at all.

If I setup a virtual server with SQL Server installed, and buy the 70-461 exam book, start reading it and practising, would this be a good place to start for starting to learn SQL?

    Thanks,
    Sisko

Yes – I support SQL servers for a few customers now and have been involved in various migration projects.

Understand the install process, instance setup, security etc. Then try backups\restores and maintenance plans.

SQL server is a bit of beast but worth learning if you have the time.

I would probably spend some money on a Pluralsight subscription and go through their training.
