    Hello hope you are well.

3 years ago I paid for a 3 year subscription which will run out in a few days. Unfortunately I think I was duped on price and McAfee are trying to do the same thing again.

You see when you manually click renew your subscription on the GUI it takes you to the shopping cart with the product you are renewing already there with the price. Here comes the problem, the product is not anything listed in McAfee's suite of products it is just "McAfee SecurityCenter" and described as "Developed specifically for your Dell PC".

The issue is the price is £35.99 and I have no idea what features I am getting but one thing I know for certain is that it is NOT McAfee Total Protection because it says I can upgrade to McAfee Total Protection if I pay another £10 so £45.99. If you visit the McAfee website McAfee Total Protection costs £32.49

The subscription is for 1 year only, I'm not making any schoolboy errors, so what the hell is going on here. Through my anti-virus software McAfee are trying to charge me more. They are using terms like "Developed specifically for your Dell PC" to make you think it is a specialised version your getting when it's not, there is nothing special about it.

Hell I only see virus and spyware protection listed on my software no mention of malware or adware which is mentioned on the McAfee website.

Is what McAfee are doing here in anyway wrong and can I take legal action?

If not can anyone recommend an well priced and effective anti-virus software to buy?

This is a shame as my PC has been safe so far but at a dodgy price it seems.

    Microsoft security essentials is Free.

    AVG Free is Free.

    Avast Essential is Free.

    Avira Free Anitvirus is Free.

If you don't like McAfee, don't buy it, I wouldn't buy Dell either.

    Thanks for your feedback guys.

My post wasn't complaining about McAfee's level of protection but the fact they are selling me personally, a product for more money when the same product AND a better one they are selling on their website is cheaper.

I'm aware of all the free anti-virus software, I've not just arrived from Mars. I'm not entirely sure if the free versions are enough protection, that is just my opinion, which is why I am after paid versions.

I doubt any action can be taken against McAfee, I went on MSE to check anyway, people gave the same responses as you.

I have a new Barclays account and just found that with online banking Kaspersky Internet Security RRP £49.99 is free for 1 year so I'll get that once McAfee has expired.

    Cheers.

Not sure exactly what you think a commercial product will do over a free one that you need.

The number 1 thing you can do is be savvy about security and how hackers attack your box.

Not heard of ESET but if you have migrated your customers to it then I'll keep that in mind in future. Kaspersky will do me for now.

Honestly I'm not sure either but I'm both paranoid and constantly anxious, I make sure the upstairs bathroom slippers are against the wall because I think someone will trip over them in the dark at night and fall down the stairs. I have issues. Anyway we can mark this thread as solved, thanks for the feedback.
