Question Network admin salary.

Hi Guys.

I am in a 1st / 2nd line job with the intent of moving into a 3rd line role in the next 3 years or so...

I know the salary of a '2nd line tech' in the uk, So I am wondering what would a 3rd line (network admin / manager) get:

(a) in the public sector UK ?

(b) in the private sector UK ?

(working in a ms server 03/08 environment). perhaps some cisco switches / routers as well.

Cheers - fatp.

P.S. I have looked at job boards on the internet but they all seem to vary a lot, in some cases 20K difference

Money shouldn't really be motivating you on your career choice, you should be looking at doing what your interested in.

As for Admin salaries they can vary quite a lot, it depends on the persons job roles and responsability. I know an admin who doesn't really do a lot and she is on 19k, I also know a guy who is an admin for a company called KPMG and he is on 50k but he does have a lot of responsability.

In public sector for Education anyway (Council & National Government pay more) you're looking at £18.5k upwards. In the private sector, again it depends on the company (size, location, industry, technology it uses, any bespoke software, whether or not it's in a single location or there's lots of travelling, etc) it can range from £18k to £40k - hence the £20k difference between level 3 jobs.

Not 100% relevant but you might find this page useful for comparing salaries:

http://www.mysalary.co.uk/index.php

Popped 18k into it as a demo and this is what it returned, main things to bear in mind are it doesn't account for a) experience and b) folk lying

The reason why I asked this question was...

I know 2 people who do the same job and same responsibilities:

(a) Private Sector -Law firm - Network admin - 32K plus bonus 34k in total

(b) Public Sector - School - Network admin - 24k plus good pension and 1/4 year paid hols.

A difference in 10K but each has pro's / cons for each job.

both in the same city in the midlands, similar age as well, ...

Are you sure? On £24k pa s/he is either pro-rata if getting 1/4 year hols (so not getting £24k, but the equivalent), or working like us on practically the bare minimum holiday (20-25 days A/L plus bank hols) entitlement.
