    Guys, and chicks

How many of yall here are tired of hearing success stories of people suceeding and getting good jobs etc

Here is a topic for all of yall

I fell of and I fell off bad and I want to get back up.

I need help and support from all of yall because I fell off.

    what should I do

I lost my job close to 1 month ago and I being unemployed since then.

I get a lot of interviews but I never get hired.

I being working in IT close to 5 yesrs now. Do I have to go bsck to a helpdesk job or junior engineer (recruiters say I am over qualified for them) I was a infrastructure consultant in my last role and did large projects and is solid.

Or is my career over and should I stay home for the rest of my life and cry like a baby I being out of work for close to 4 weeks and I cant take it no more.

How do I get back up as a champ please advice.

The global economy is not so good at the moment, keep trying, 2-6 months of job hunting is not unusual.

Look honestly at why you get interviews but don't get hired. What can you do to land the positions.

How can you present yourself in the absolutely best possible light so that they cant help but give you the job.

Take advantage of the time to reassess your life, go surfing, take a bike ride, go backpacking etc.

Losing a job is really a minor inconvenience compared to some of life's other hurdles.

Realise that you probably left your employer little option as you have been looking for other jobs for some time. So this situation is in part your own making.

Only start crying at the 6 month point after you've made every possible effort to fix the situation.

It could be that an area you specialise in has become defunct or is experiencing a drop in requirement. A friend of mine was a Mainframe specialist enjoying many years as a well paid, valued professional. A few years back that all changed and while he hadn't been checking the market, he found that the requirement for his role had become very niche. It nearly ruined him but he took a drop in pay and started working his way up again and is doing great again. Similar for a friend specialising in Unicenter.
I also find the title consultant to be very generic. It can cover a massive range of activities. Some consultants focus on one area while others cover all areas. I'd look into your skills and see if theres anything going thats more specific or look for Architect roles. It all depends on what you've done in the past, what do you want to do? You might be from a server background but applying for network infrastructure consultant roles where you're not ticking the boxes they want for a candidate.
As said don't lose heart, if you enjoy IT you're in the right game and nothing should stop you progressing your IT career. If you have a good attitude and are determined enough nothing will stop you, keep that mindset and you'll be OK. Try to enjoy your time but take applying and chasing as seriously as you would your work. Don't take your foot off the gas in terms of job applications. Review your CV or post it on here and we'll take a look. I'd also consider what else you could do. A friend of mine was an infrastructure consultant in the UK and struggled to get the same type of work so he went back to Wintel and messaging contracts as these still pay well enough. I don't know his plans but there are no gaps on his CV, bills getting paid etc so he's happy enough.

I want to discuss this with you, unfortunately you're only giving people here half the story and as such they can only go by what you're telling them. I want to say it will be alright but hand on heart at the moment I can't say that to you.

I don't know how big the recruitment area is around you but from what you told me I wouldn't be surprised to find it a little hard to try and get another job just about now. I don't want to break any privacy issues here but I am really not shocked.

If I were you and I was in your shoes I would be looking for work in a different part of the country, at least for now, a fresh start and all that (I did something similar after a particularly bad relationship breakup, did me the world of good (so much so that I met the woman of my dreams and married her :)).

I would probably also suggest having a look at http://www.certforums.com/forums/training-development/50362-career-no-nos.html

What I will say is that your IT career isn't over yet, you have time to remedy any and all issues you have, just take time to think what you could do right the next time things don't go according to plan.

I was made redundant in 2009. I was nearly two years without a proper job. I did some work for the 2011 census and slowly got back into work. Some months all I did was rack servers for one evening. Longer contracts came. I never turned anything down and made sure I worked hard and did a good job. Eventually clients started asking for me by name and so the agents came to me first. Now I have a good contract, been here just over a year and got a 6 month extension from tomorrow. I have to live away from home during the week, but it's worth it.

Just to make you feel better, I spent close to 6 months out of work about 5 years ago (just at the start of the recession), in all my time in IT that was a first for me.

With the run up to Xmas you may find it gets harder to try and find work, no one hires and then before you know it you're in March and budgets have been agreed and all of a sudden new roles are opening up.

Just carry on applying for roles, don't get despondent because that comes through, the right role is out there for you.

    thanks simon,

yeah at the end of the year there are heaps of contract roles and yeah mid december virtually there will be little jobs advertised but most people that do advertise actually do hire but the start date will be at the start of the year.

new years is the best time for new roles though so many are advertised,

    - - - Updated - - -

I was wondering what kind of roles I should aim for

first of all money wise I am not desperate, I being working in IT since I broke into the industry as a teenager and have being living off my parents house and I am still with my parents so I have saved **** loads of money.

One of the reasons why I still haven't gotten hired is because of the level of roles I am aiming for. I apply for senior level sys admin/engineer and about a year ago they wouldn't even call me for those kinds of roles now they call me and I get interviews and even make to final stage but never get hired. In my last role I was a intermediate (but did the role of a senior cause I did a lot of design work and lead projects and the kind of accounts that I handled were big) and I was in this role for 2 years, should I aim for another intermediate level sys engineer or admin role or what? Because the chance of me getting one is higher much much higher but salary wise I will get probably 5k more at max. I was bored in my intermediate level position and it is not challenging and I believe I am over that stage and want a more senior role, but I miss out. I cant get junior admin or junior engineer ones like I used to be able to do when I was starting out cause people say I am over qualified, what should I do bro?

Its common to have to go where the work is, I've spent much of my working years living and working away from home.

Many people emigrate from New Zealand to Australia for better work opportunities.

Ultimately its a personal choice, but I think its generally worth branching out a bit when you are young.

Don't let the depression get the best of you. It's at times like these that it really pays off to eat healthy and do a little bit of exercise every day as they greatly assist in your mental health, which in turn helps you avoid depression. By building a more positive mindset, you may also be able to radiate a welcoming personality to potential customers. It's something to think about as skills are sometimes only half the picture that you can provide potential hirers.

ofcourse I know that, I go to the gym 5 times a week and I eat healthy.

You might not know this but I do fitness and yeah I am built and have a lot of muscles, but I go to gym and workout and it keeps my mind good.

If it wasn't for gym and healthy food I would be dead.

not many people know this but I actually lost like 42 kg which is 92.4 lb which is a very happy personal achievement. Also my body fat is 17 percent which is decent

I hope I find another role soon, I am applying international as well and its crazy because a lot of aussie companies and getting back to me.

The thing is guys in the last two years I specialised in the public cloud and done large projects and know it inside out so a lot of people over there are looking for these kinds of skills so I am in demand there

So in nz the public cloud is not that famous, there is jack all jobs for it don't get me wrong there are some.

I applied to Australia, and other European countries.

**** loads of recruiters in Australia rang me and a coupe from UK and one from Germany.

wow. But I love new Zealand its my home, I still live with my parents and don't want to move countries but I got to do what I got to do.
