    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good text editor that can be used for free. I have tried to get a good one but my attempts have been pretty poor, and still not found a good one.

I thought I would ask some people with a lot more exp than me as I know some people probably got a lot tricks up their sleeves

Any replys, I would be very grateful

    Cheers

Depends on what OS, and what you want the editor to do.

Under Windows I see nothing wrong with Notepad. If there are problems with editing *nix files under Windows then Wordpad does this correctly. If you want a slightly better behaved editor with syntax highlighting then Crimson Editor is good.

For *nix systems you will only prise vi away from me when I'm dead!

I would have said Notepad, but Harry beat me to it. :)

As far as "free" goes, I get Office in my Action Pack subscription, so for more complex tasks, I use that. Considering I buy the Action Pack anyway, Office is "free" to me, more or less.

I'm guessing that you use Windows and are looking for something other than Notepad. I would go for Crimson if Notepad's not for you.

    Thanks for all the replys.

Sorry I did forget to mention my OS which is Windows SP2, so Crimson and NotePad ++ sounds like the one's to have a good look at.

I got nothing against NotePad but just wanted to know some better equipted texteditors.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Just a bit of advice. If you put a smiley directly after a link, it breaks, because it presumes the characters that make up the smiley are part of the link. :(
